Help Families in Lake County, IL by providing programs and services to educate and establish links to essential community resources

About Mano a Mano Family Resource Center Foundation Inc.

The Mission of Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, as stated on the home page, is to "empower immigrant and underserved families of Lake County to become full participants in American life by providing quality programs and services that educate and establish links to essential community resources. Our mission is sustained by our respect for human dignity and our belief in the equality of all people."

SERVING A COMMUNITY NEED

Founded in September 2000, Mano a Mano Family Resource Center opened its door and began services, thanks to the foresight of community leaders concerned with the needs of the rapidly increasing Latino population in the Round Lake area of IL. Many of these families were finding it difficult to adapt to their new communities because they spoke little or no English, lacked a high school education and did not have an adequate income.

Mano a Mano provides the resources to help families improve their quality of life and make a smooth transition into the community without erasing their cultural roots.

Mano a Mano serves clients all over Lake County Illinois, particularly in the Round Lake area as well as McHenry and Cook Counties and surrounding communities at large regardless of race, national origin, age, religion, creed, or disability.

Mano a Mano has successfully implemented the following programs:

  • Information and Referral: We help people apply and obtain public assistance such as Food Stamps, All Kids and Medicaid. Components of this program also provide referrals to other social services organizations and develop a working relationship with other government and non-profit agencies to establish a safety network to support the wellbeing of the community.
  • Employment Connection: This program bridges the gap between those people needing a job and those employers needing workers. Further efforts prepare clients for employment opportunities through resume building, educational opportunities, computer training, job searching, and the development of job interview skills.
  • Health Education: These are well attended Health Education seminars where families are provided free educational opportunities to maintain their physical and mental health.
  • English as a Second Language: Five levels of ESL are provided. Students learn English while instructors help them assimilate to their new community.
  • Computer Instruction: Basic computer knowledge and use is provided to adults and children.
  • GED and Pre-GED Preparation Classes: GED tutoring classes are provided for adults who wish to take the GED test.
  • Homework Help: After school program helps kids from 1st to 6th grade with their homework.
  • Childcare: Safe and reliable child care is available while clients take classes.
