ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
Mano a Mano has provided ESL classes since the year 2000. Our students not only learn English but also learn how to better assimilate to their new community. There are 4 levels of instruction plus a citizenship level, where students learn history of the United States and civics.

Mano a Mano follows the Illinois ESL content Standards. Students take a pre test and a post test that measure their English learning.

Classes meet twice a week for two hours, for three months.

Childcare is provided.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL PROGRAM
This program:
♦  Conducts outreach activities that inform immigrants about the availability of public benefits and other services that support personal and family well-being and economic self-sufficiency, and the eligibility criteria and immigration issues related to applying for and receiving these benefits and services.

♦  Provides information and referral services to immigrant families who need quick information and referrals about benefits and other service.

♦  Provides case management services to immigrant families who need long-term assistance accessing and maintaining benefits and services.

♦  Provides accurate interpretation and translation services for immigrants who have difficulty communicating with the Illinois Department of Human Services and other agencies offering supportive services due to language barriers.

EMPLOYMENT CONNECTION PROGRAM
The purpose the Employment Connection Program is to facilitate the connection between prospective employees and employers in Northern Illinois at no cost to the companies or the applicants. This includes providing job seeking individuals with the knowledge and resources needed to confidently obtain employment.

Services of the Program includes Job Readiness classes, access to on site recruitment and job fairs, help preparing for a job interview, filling out a job application and writing a resume.

GED GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
Mano a Mano helps people prepare to successfully take the GED test. The General Education Development Program (GED) has the objective of testing student's aptitudes and academic knowledge on the basic topics that they learn during high school.

The areas to study are: Writing, Reading (Art and Literature), Social, Science, Mathematics and the Constitution.

Childcare is provided.

Students should register at CLC and take the test at the same place.

Who should take the GED? Adults that did not finish high school. Also people seeking:
♦  Personal achievement.
♦  Development of aptitudes and potential.
♦  Professional improvement.

Requirements:
♦  Must be 19 years or older.
♦  Have a valid State ID or the Matricula Consular.
♦  A resident of Lake County.

Tests are taken at the College of Lake County.

HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM
This program provides quarterly seminars at the Round Lake Area Library as well as small meetings at clients' houses. The quarterly meetings consist of 2 hour sessions where professionals from many different disciplines volunteer their time to provide presentations on health related issues. Some of the topics include: Breast Cancer, Depression, Anxiety, Nutrition, How to Grow your own Vegetables, Diabetes, Parents Role Models for Children Eating Habits, Stress and Relaxation, etc. At these quarterly meetings we provide a healthy snack and do raffles consisting of vitamins, baby's clothes and other prizes, as a way to motivate people to come back to the next seminar; attendance at these training meetings ranges between thirty to forty adults per meeting.

Every week small meetings take place at client's houses, churches, schools, and other gatherings hosted by socials services agencies. At these meetings participants learn about nutrition, exercising, and prevention of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Mano a Mano provides a healthy snack and educational materials as part of the 2 hour presentation.

COMPUTER PROGRAM
This program is designed to provide basic computer instruction to adults and children. Students learn Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Windows, Keyboarding, Internet, Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher and Access. The activities for this program include learning how a computer works, extensive keyboarding practice, hands-on activities such as creating and saving documents, creating folders, flyers, Power Point presentations and brochures, creating spreadsheets, and databases.

Classes meet twice a week for two hours, for three months.

Childcare is provided.

HOMEWORK HELP
This program is designed for kids from 1st to 6th grade. Volunteer instructors help children doing their homework assignments. This program is designed for children that struggle doing their homework due to lack of parental involvement or language barriers.

CHILDCARE PROGRAM
Childcare is provided to all of Mano a Mano's clients while they are at the center taking classes.

The only eligibility requirement is that parents are clients of Mano a Mano and are in the facilities during the time we care for their children. The parents must be participating in our programs such as English as a Second Language, Computer Instruction, GED Preparation classes, and Health related workshops.

Children learn while playing with other children, having lots of fun. We have a children's room and children's equipment at our facility. They can play, draw, paint, do hand-crafted activities, listen to music, watch movies and enjoy different activities with other children.

Space is limited.

KINDERGARTEN READINESS
To help children enter kindergarten ready to succeed, Mano a Mano in partnership with the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL) and thanks to the support of United Way of Lake County, provides support for parents preparing kids for kindergarten. We provide kindergarten readiness camps and other services including individual student assessments and family literacy training and activities. The kindergarten camps are attended by parents or caregivers with their preschool children.

CITIZENSHIP
Mano a Mano offers citizenship classes, where students learn history of the United States and civics. These classes help students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to pass their Citizenship Interview.
